About Haridwar Tourism
Said to be one of the oldest cities, Haridwar's
existence dates back to as early as the days of Buddha. The name of
this holy city means 'Gateway to God' in Hindi. It is considered as one
of the holiest amongst the seven places of pilgrimage for Hindus, and
is a popular gateway to the Char Dhams (the four pilgrimages of Uttarakhand).Haridwar
is the first town where the River Ganga descends to touch the plains.
It has been also addressed as Mayapuri, Gangadwar and Mokhsadwar in the
various Hindu scriptures. A city of rich cultural and religious
heritage, and also venue for the famous Kumbha Mela that takes place
once in every 12 years, today it is gaining significance as an
industrial city as well.
Overview of the destination A small town, the main attraction is the Ganga (Har ki Pauri). Believed to be sacred to take bath here. The water is very cold
Food, sight-seeing and shopping Food is available in various restaurants. I love parathas so just near the Har-Ki-Pauri Police chowki, there is a punjabi restaurant. Very tidy and neat.

My husband and I plan to visit Garhwal in November. We will be proceeding to Haridwar/ Rishikesh from Dehradun and have just 2D/2N to cover both places; our return train is from Haridwar, early morning. Wanted a recommendation from others who may have been there as to which of the places (Haridwar/ Rishikesh) should we make our base. Apart from visits to all the temples etc., we would like to do some river rafting at Rishikesh (basic) as well.
Please provide suggestions as to how I should plan my itenarary & what would be the best way to effectively enjoy the beauty of both places.
Can anyone tell me where the temple for Bharat, the Ramayan legend, is located in Haridwar. Pl tell me where is it exactly and in which part of Haridwar and how to reach it. I have heard about one in Rishikesh also; but this one is abt Haridwar.
